My idea is pretty simple. Rather than closing schools, perhaps DCPS would create schools with special programs in order to raise interest in those parents living within their boundary. Not your run of the mill vocational programs, but something better. Something like a youth orchestra program, strings, percussion ect...Special language study (Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Arabic). My Son is enrolled in the DC Youth Orchestra, learning the viola. I'm a guitarist. It would be wonderful for parents to be able to enroll their kids in their neighborhood school with programs like that. Not all kids have the option to go to a special school like Duke Ellington. Make all under enrolled schools a special school. A sense of urgency created "Get in to your neighborhood school before spaces run out" Top notch language and music instruction, not available in other DCPS schools. Just an Idea.
