Ward 8 Mtg-Malcolm X Staff Table "What haven't we thought of" P1

• Malcolm X was reconstituted, why would you close the school if you usually get three years for that process? What was the purpose of that reconstitution if we’re not going to follow that process to the letter of the law?

• All of the current staff is new. Why didn’t DCPS just close the building before it was reconstituted?

• Since the students have just been through a reconstitution (and the entire staff changed this year). They have been exposed to a lot of change already – why isn’t that being considered?

• We know that this kind of change sets students back roughly a year. We have gained traction. But, with this (consolidation) we will essentially lose three years of effective teaching and learning. Additionally, Malcolm X Elementary underachieved seven years prior to the reconstitution…this consolidation process will prolong that underachievement for our students.

• The students only see maybe 3-4 familiar faces now and you’re going to send them to a school where they don’t know anyone.

• Our students are not being merged with Turner under a mutually beneficial process and with a new name. Essentially, they are being absorbed into Turner and, as a result, are once again being told that they are less then and are losing their school identity.

• It feels like we’re being sold out for money (said in the context of the Councilmember's comments on the economic development opportunity that Malcolm X presents).

• In the second year of a turnaround model we usually change the staff but we can’t keep going back and forth on the turnaround vs. reconstitution.

• Concerning the consolidation of Malcolm X, the only justification given was for economic development – that’s what our Ward rep on the DC Council just said.

• It doesn't seem like any of the decision makers have come to visit our schools. We want them to come to our schools and see the difference.

• To shut us down for economic development opportunities is just wrong
